CHRISTIAN MENTORING AND YOUTH VIOLENCE SUBJECT OF NEW FILM-LENGTH VIDEO

Bladensburg, MD, September 4, 2011 – According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, homicide is the second leading cause of death among youth aged 10–24 years in the United States. Violence is also a major cause of nonfatal injuries among youth. In 2009, a total of 650,843 young people aged 10–24 years were treated in emergency departments for nonfatal injuries sustained from assaults. No state is immune to the devastating impact of youth violence.

Though the incidences of youth violence are decreasing in the United States, violent incidents committed by youth and in which youth are victims remains high, especially in urban areas. Since the evangelical church in the United States is largely a relationship-based entity, it can be very effective in reaching out to youth affected by violence and building positive relationships that can help guide youth behavior.

The video, A Chance at Mercy, is a Christian-themed drama that follows Myron Chancellor, nicknamed “Chance”, who commits an act of shocking violence at the start of the film. The film deals with the aftermath of this murder and the efforts of a local church pastor to engage Carl Seaton, a man with challenges of his own, to mentor him. Carl’s only daughter was killed, and he sees his mentoring of Chance as a means to honor his daughter’s memory. However he discovers that his relationship with Chance is more challenging than he expected, and he is eventually confronted with choices that could damage his relationship with Chance and affect his life forever.

The 120 minute film was written and directed by Louis Jones, assistant pastor and youth minister at Christian Conquest Word of God Church in Washington, D.C. The project was partially funded by the Peace and Justice Support Network of the Mennonite Church and was produced in conjunction with Christian Conquest Word of God Church, Bishop Paul L. Gaskins, Senior Pastor. Members of Jones’ church acted in and served as the crew on the project. While noting that A Chance at Mercy is far from a Hollywood grade production, Jones hopes that the video will 1) inspire Christians to more fully engage at-risk youth, and 2) foster discussions about youth violence and how the church can be more effective in prevention.

The video will be available for purchase and download at www.conquestpublishers.com in February 2013.
